What to expect, what we ask of adopters, and how to get started.
We are not a high-volume placement operation. We take time with each horse and each adopter, because a thoughtful match is the best protection a horse has against ending up in trouble down the road. Adoption is a working partnership with us, not a transaction.
Submit an adoption application. Tell us about your experience, your facility, your team (vet, farrier, trainer), and what you are looking for. Allow about 20 minutes.
If your application is a fit, we follow up by phone or email. From there we schedule a farm visit so you can meet horses in person, ideally with your trainer.
For most matches we offer a trial period at your facility. Insurance, transport, and care arrangements are agreed in writing before the horse leaves our farm.
If everyone is happy, we finalize the adoption with a written contract that protects the horse for life. Use our online transfer contract generator to prepare your copy.
These are not negotiable. They exist because they keep horses safe.
If you ever cannot keep the horse for any reason, the horse is offered back to TTP first, before any other sale, transfer, or rehoming.
The horse will never be sold, transferred, or surrendered to a slaughter buyer, kill pen, livestock auction, or any party who could direct the horse to slaughter.
The horse will not return to racing and will not be used for breeding without our written consent.
You agree to keep us reasonably informed of the horse’s welfare, notify us of any change of location, owner, or major medical event, and allow occasional check-in visits or photos.
Safe fencing, clean water, shelter, appropriate forage, and an established team (vet, farrier, and where appropriate, a trainer).
Be candid about your experience, time, budget, and goals. We will be candid in return. The right horse for the right rider is the whole point.
Yes. Adoption fees vary by horse and reflect the time and care that has been invested in their transition. Fees go directly back into the program and the horses still in our care.
We have placed horses outside of Virginia. We evaluate out-of-state adoptions on a case-by-case basis and may require a referral and a barn visit by a trusted contact in your area.
Yes — provided you have a trainer or coach you work with regularly. Many of our horses thrive in amateur homes when the support team is solid.
Sometimes. A few horses do best in a quiet pasture-companion role for soundness or temperament reasons. Indicate your interest on the application.
Anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. We will not rush a match for the sake of speed.
Submit your adoption application. We will be in touch.
